5 steps to being a sustainable business

5 steps to being a sustainable business

Sustainability is the only way forward

Earth Day comes around every year, but this time round it seems more relevant than ever. We’ve seen over the last couple of years that our beloved Earth can repair itself and as technology advances we can ensure that we as a human race can create everyday items that no longer harm the planet.

Below are 5 key things to consider when building a brand that is sustainable. They are:

  1. Suppliers & Manufacturers
  2. Products
  3. Packaging
  4. Shipping
  5. Service

1. Suppliers & Manufacturers

If you’re not making the products yourself then you’re probably using a supplier and/or a manufacturer. Always do your research and ask lots of questions such as what materials they are using and where they are sourcing them from. When we talk about sustainability we are not just talking about the planet but also the people involved as well. Always make sure that the employees are being treated well and are being paid fairly.

2. Products

This is probably the most obvious item on the list, but ensuring that all your products are eco-friendly is vital. People are looking for authenticity and if it looks like you’re not serious about being sustainable then they might go elsewhere. If you say you are a completely sustainable brand then make sure 100% of all your products are sustainable. If you fall at the first hurdle your customer might question your integrity in other areas of your business.

3. Packaging

Whether you are a bricks-in-mortar store or an e-commerce shop that fully operates online, the product isn’t just what you’re selling. It’s the whole package (sorry couldn’t resist). If you’re saying it’s 100% eco-friendly and then wrap your product in single-use plastics or plastic bag, you might not be getting any repeat customers! There are loads of great packaging solutions (see image above) that use paper and cardboard that can be used over and over again or recycled easily.

4. Shipping

Shipping costs can be a nightmare but above all else they could also be costing the Earth – literally. You may want to consider where you manufacture your products and whether you produce them locally or internationally; and if you’re prepared to ship them internationally. How green do you want to go?

5. Service

As mentioned above, being sustainable is not just about the product you’re selling but the people involved as well. This means that your service game has to be efficient, professional and polite. If your actions do not line up with your values as a brand then people will quickly turn to businesses.

Conclusion

With any start-up or business that wants to go in a new direction there are lots of things to explore and consider. When aiming to be as environmentally conscious as possible it’s important to remember that customers are looking at everything you do, from start to finish. Remember to be transparent about your manufacturing, products, packaging, shipping, and service enabling customers to see that you are being ethical, sustainable and authentic.
